The Luxembourg Sinfonietta, the leading ensemble for contemporary music in Luxembourg, was founded in 1999 by its conductor Marcel Wengler. Ever since that time, it has endeavoured to make contemporary music accessible to a wider public and to present Luxembourg composers, particularly abroad. The Luxembourg Sinfonietta experienced its first international success at the World Exhibition in Hanover in 2000, where it represented the Saarland, Lorraine and Luxembourg in the cultural programme EXPO 2000, hosted by the German pavillion, giving three first performances on the subject «Lucifer». The ensemble has also played in Germany, France, Switzerland and Romania. In November 2007, the Luxembourg Sinfonietta gave two concerts as part of the International Festival «World Music Days» in Hong Kong. Since 2002, the Luxembourg Sinfonietta has published 6 CDs covering a total of 35 premières and first recordings.
After the «World Music Days», which took place in Luxembourg for the first time in the year 2000, the «International Composition Competition», which has been organised every year since 2002, is a highspot on the agenda of the Luxembourg Society for Contemporary Music. For this event, composers from all over the world are invited to compose new works for the Luxembourg Sinfonietta and every year, 150 composers from more than 40 countries take part. More than 900 works have been written especially for this competition and the Luxembourg Sinfonietta; the ensemble has thus firmly established itself on the international music scene.
